Description

Siberian Husky is a Large size working dog breed that make great home pets and sled dogs. The breed's willingness to work and love of exercise is matched with a friendly and gentle nature. These are sociable, energetic dogs and your Siberian Husky puppy will love being a member of your pack, including kids and dogs.

Size: An average male stands between 21 and 23.5 inches high while the female averages 20 to 22 inches. The male weighs between 45 and 60 pounds and the female 35 to 50 pounds.

Personality: Friendly, gentle, dignified; alert, but not aggressive.

Temperament: The AKC Standard says the Siberian Husky "does not display the possessive qualities of the guard dog, nor is he overly suspicious of strangers or aggressive with other dogs." Indeed, the free-spirited Siberian Husky is usually good-natured with everyone. He is playful, athletic, agile, and light on his feet.

Activity Requirements: Very Active; Siberians are highly energetic and enjoy regular exercise. This Breed needs a lot of vigorous activity in order to maintain health and happiness.
They were developed as sled dogs, which means they have energy and endurance to spare, so adopting a Husky means adopting an active lifestyle. This breed enjoys long walks, hikes, jogs and bike rides. In the yard they can play fetch for hours, and some even like to play frisbee.

Behavioral Traits: The biggest caution about Siberian Huskies is their reputation for being escape artists. They will wander away from home whenever they get the chance. Well bred Huskies should never be aggressive or overly shy and timid.

Diet: High-quality protein-based food.1.5 to 2 cups of dry food a day, divided into two meals. When it comes to meal times, Siberian Huskies are known for being "easy keepers" requiring a relatively small amount of food for their size.
He was bred to pull a light load at a fast pace over great distances in low temperatures on the smallest possible intake of food. A thinner dog will live a longer, happier, healthier life. He is by nature fastidiously clean and is free from body odor and parasites.

Keeping this all in mind, general guidelines are as follows:
2 to 4 lbs. 1/3 to 1/2 cups per day.
5 to 8 lbs. 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
8 to 10 lb. adult = 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
10 to 12 lb. adult = 3/4 to 1 cup per day.
13 to 16 lb. adult = 1 to 1 and 1/4 cups per day.

Trainability: They are extremely difficult to train. Huskies fit best with confident, experienced dog owners who set rules and deliver consistency. Like all breeds, Huskies need obedience training, but they seem to have an uncanny ability to distinguish the difference between home and class behaving beautifully in class while disregarding commands when at home.
Siberian Huskies are pack dogs, and they need an owner who is the clear leader of the pack. This makes training easier because you will find that your dog respects you, but don't be surprised if he tests the limits of your position in the pack and tries to take control from time to time.

History: Siberian Husky originated in Northeast Asia. The breed belongs to the Spitz genetic family. They caught the eye of the public when they began winning sled races in the early 1900s, but they made headlines in 1925 when a relay of Siberian Huskies traveled 658 miles in only 5 and half days to rush a lifesaving serum to Nome, Alaska, where an epidemic of diphtheria had broken out. The Siberian Club of America was founded in 1938 and the Siberian Husky was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1930 and the Canadian Kennel Club in 1939.
