Description

Great Danes are gentle giants and a loving family dog, friendly and energetic. He's patient with kids and eager to please his people, while also being a protective guardian of home and family.

Size: The Great Dane is a large German breed of domestic dog known for its giant size. The Great Dane is one of the tallest dog breeds. In spite of the size, Great Danes are considered gentle giants, are moderately playful and good with children. Great Dane puppy will grow into a majestic fellow, standing 30" tall or more at the shoulder. Should he stand up on his hind legs for a hug, he may well tower over some adults.

Personality: Friendly, patient, dependable. Great Danes are considered gentle giants. They are moderately playful, affectionate and good with children. They will guard their home. Great Danes generally get along with other animals, particularly if raised with them, but some individuals in the breed can be aggressive with dogs they do not know.

Temperament: A Great Dane can provide years of affectionate and loyal companionship. Owners of Danes should have a securely fenced yard or enclosure to prevent theft of or escape by their dog. Most Danes are not jumpers by nature; a six-foot fence should be sufficient. Many Great Danes have a fairly high prey-drive and will chase cats, rabbits or other small animals. Danes left alone for hours on end may become barkers, which nearby neighbors tend not to appreciate due to the depth and volume of the Great Dane bark.

Activity Requirements: 20-40 minutes/day and generally do not require an enormous amount of daily exercise. Indeed, as they are so rapidly growing, young Great Danes should not be taken jogging or otherwise exercised excessively during the first 1-2 years of life to prevent bone and joint disorders that can be caused by overuse.
Danes are truly house dogs, despite their size. Danes do not thrive being kept isolated, kenneled or crated for long hours at a time, although they typically do require a securely fenced yard for exercise, elimination and playtime.

Behavioral Traits: Puppies naturally play aggressively, chew on each other, growl and nip as part of learning appropriate canine pack structure and behavior.

Diet: Until the age of four to five months, a Great Dane puppy should have three meals per day. After that, give him two meals per day for life. He should never have only one meal per day.

Keeping this all in mind, general guidelines are as follows:
2 to 4 lb. 1/3 to 1/2 cups per day.
5 to 8 lb. 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
8 to 10 lb. adult = 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
10 to 12 lb. adult = 3/4 to 1 cup per day.
13 to 16 lb. adult = 1 to 1 and 1/4 cups per day.

Trainability: Great Danes are considered easy to train, but some Great Dane fanciers say that individuals can be stubborn learners. Danes are described as being of average intelligence in the dog world but typically are easy to housebreak and train to standard obedience commands such as sit, stay, down, come and heel. As a breed, they have a strong desire to please. Many Great Danes compete very successfully in obedience, agility, rally and other performance competitions.
