Cavapoos are affectionate, friendly and loyal companions and a great choice for first time dog owners because they are so amenable and sweet natured. They thrive on being around people and therefore are very receptive to learning new things and adore the one to one attention they are given when being trained. This breed is a highly adaptable small dog and one that fits in with most lifestyles.
Size: Cavapoos are quite small, weighing anywhere up to 20 to 25 pounds, and 12 – 14 inches tall.Though small in stature, they are still hardy and enjoy busy family life from the beach to the mountains. Cavapoo puppies are adaptable and fit beautifully in any number of situations. A comfortable size for most homes.
Personality: The Cavapoo can inherit many of the characteristics and personalities of their parent breeds and they are renowned for being affectionate, friendly and loyal companions and family pets. They are renowned for being extremely sweet-natured which means they get along with everyone and everything. Cavapoos become totally devoted to their families, loving nothing more than to be part of a household and involved in everything that goes on in the home. They are also known to get along well with children and when well socialized from a young age, they like being around other dogs and pets too. The Cavapoo is a cross between two pure breeds, namely a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They are sometimes called Cavoodles.
Temperament: The Cavapoo's temperament are gentle and loving dogs who get along very well with young children. This breed is well-suited for companionship with small children or other small pets.
Activity Requirements: Cavapoos are lively, energetic and inquisitive little dogs. The Cavapoo is well suited to apartment living provided they are sufficiently exercised. They thrive on daily securely leashed walks, off-lead play in a securely fenced yard, and family play sessions. They are relatively active but do adapt to their owner's lifestyle. The Cavapoo breed should walk daily and engage in indoor play time every day. They are an agile and athletic breed who love to play fetch and chase a ball endlessly.
Behavioral Traits: The Cavapoo thrives on human company and hates being left on their own for any extended periods of time. As such, they are happy when they live in a household where one person usually stays at home when everyone else is out. If left to their own devices for long periods of time, these charming small dogs can quickly develop some unwanted behavioral issues which can be hard to correct. This includes excessive barking, being destructive around the home and suffering from separation anxiety.
Diet: The Cavapoo is a “busy” dog that loves to be active and as a result requires a healthy diet of high-quality dry dog food.
Keeping this all in mind, general guidelines are as follows:
2 to 4 lbs. 1/3 to 1/2 cups per day.
5 to 8 lbs. 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
8 to 10 lb. adult = 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
10 to 12 lb. adult = 3/4 to 1 cup per day.
13 to 16 lb. adult = 1 to 1 and 1/4 cups per day.
Trainability: Cavapoos are clever dogs having inherited their intelligence from both parent breeds and they need to be given the right amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation for them to be truly happy, well-rounded and obedient dogs. Early socialization and obedience are recommended. The Cavapoo breed may be difficult to house train. The crate training method works best. They will not respond to harsh or heavy-handed methods. Training must be done with firmness, fairness, patience, and consistency. This breed responds positively to training and socialization which should be done at an early age. Keep their training sessions short and fun but make sure to use positive reinforcement. Award and praise this breed when accomplishing an achievement during training.
Colors: Every Cavapoo is slightly different when it comes to colour, size, shape and coat texture because it all depends on their parent dogs and whether or not they are first generation. This particular breed is available in wide variety of different colors as well as sizes. Coat colors include solid white, black and tri-colors. The exact color and size of the Cavapoo will depend upon the size and coloring of the parent. Cavapoos colors can range from black, white, chestnut, gold, blenheim, chestnut and white, and tri color - black, white and tan.
History: Cavapoos are a cross between a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel means these charming dogs are intelligent. They were first bred in American during the 1950's by breeders who wanted to create a low-shedding dog that would be an ideal choice for people who suffer from allergies. Poodles were used to create Cavapoos for this reason. It was not very long before these charming little dogs found their way into the hearts and homes of many people in the United States.
