Description

Border Collies are frighteningly smart, active workaholics who must have a job that can be as simple as chasing a tennis ball or as demanding as training for something like herding, agility obedience, or freestyle. Borders are very people-oriented and are wonderful family dogs. Some Borders are not good with other dogs or cats, and some are great. Border Collies are the best working breed in the world for sheepherding. They also excel at performance activities such as agility, obedience, fly ball, and freestyle, among others.

Size: The Border Collie, a medium-sized dog at 30 to 45 pounds, possesses a seemingly supernatural amount of energy and stamina — a hardiness that was developed when he was required to work all day in the hills and valleys of the rugged Scottish border country, sometimes running 50 miles or more a day.

Personality: His personality is characteristically alert, energetic, hardworking, and smart. He learns quickly — so quickly that it's sometimes difficult to keep him challenged.

Temperament: Tenacious, Keen, Energetic, Responsive, Alert, Intelligent
This Breed must be busy or he becomes bored, which leads to annoying behavior, such as barking, digging, or chasing cars. He's not a dog to lie quietly on the front porch while you sip a glass of lemonade; he thrives on activity. Remember, he was bred to run and work all day herding sheep. The Border Collie is also renowned for being highly sensitive to his handler's every cue, from a whistle to a hand signal to a raised eyebrow.

Activity Requirements: Border Collies are some of the most intelligent dogs in the world, and they need a lot of physical and mental activity. They can be a challenge for even the most seasoned dog owner. They must have at least two hours of activity a day in order to stave off behavioral problems, and the behavioral problems that develop in Border Collies can be severe. He must have a task, whether it's actually herding sheep or competing in dog sports. A brisk walk or a game of fetch every day isn't enough activity for the Border Collie. That said, for the right owner, a Border Collie is a wonderful dog to live with.

Behavioral Traits: Border Collies are the Houdinis of the dog world. Mere fences can not keep them from escaping into the world. It is important to keep an eye on your Border Collie at all times. When it comes to the ideal working dog, it doesn't get much better than the Border Collie.

Diet: A high-energy working breed that requires a protein-based, high calorie, yet balanced diet in order to maintain health and happiness.

Keeping this all in mind, general guidelines are as follows:
2 to 4 lbs. 1/3 to 1/2 cups per day.
5 to 8 lbs. 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
8 to 10 lb. adult = 1/2 to 3/4 cups per day.
10 to 12 lb. adult = 3/4 to 1 cup per day.
13 to 16 lb. adult = 1 to 1 and 1/4 cups per day.

Trainability: This breed are problem-solvers and can be easily trained to do just about any task. Intelligent and observant, they can also pick up new behaviors without being taught. The Border Collie is a herding dog, which means he has an overwhelming urge to gather a flock. That flock could be sheep, children, cats, squirrels, or anything that moves, including cars. This instinct to nip, nudge, and bark, along with his energy, cannot be trained out of him. Rather, it must be directed.

Colors: Gold Border Collies may also be known to some as Australian Reds or yellow/tan. Tricolors are quite common among Border Collies. They come in all solid colors―black, chocolate, red, blue, lilac, etc., and are paired with tan and white, making them tricolored. One can even find merle-patterned tricolors.

History: The Border Collie's ancestors have been around since humans in what is now Britain first began using dogs to help guard and herd sheep. In the border country between Scotland and England, the herding dog became one of the most valuable assets a shepherd could have, and the best working dogs were bred with each other. The type varied, depending on the terrain or the work required in each region. The Border Collie was recognized by the American Kennel Club on October 1, 1995.
